Follow Your Heart
Agar art, a form of BioArt that involves painting with bacteria on agar gel in Petri dishes, has gained popularity across the globe and can be used to teach about important bacterial interactions. "Follow Your Heart", a print of agar art using the bacteria Serratia, is a testament to to the artist’s personal journey as a microbiologist and future physician while also celebrating the intricate world of environmental microbiomes. The anatomical heart-shaped design reflects the profound connection between science and art and the bacterial strains pay homage to the bacteria that call the soil in Alabama home. Viewers are invited to understand this work as scientific, such as exploring the conditions in which the Serratia pathogen produces its bright red pigment, or artistically, contemplating what it means to follow your heart.
